Velkommen til Oslo, Norway!

Hei og velkommen til Oslo, Norway! (Hi, and welcome to Oslo, Norway!) Our TILE students and professors, Natalya and Manuel, have safely landed in Oslo and settled into our accommodations. We want to tell you about our travel journey thus far!


The Flight Plan

Our Norway team left North Bay at 9am from the Nipissing University main entrance, where we were sent off by our AVP of Students, Sarah Taylor. The shuttle felt like we were on our way to summer camp – singing songs, telling stories about our lives and academic experiences, and getting to know each other. We arrived at Pearson Airport before 1pm where we met with the last of the TILE students travelling with us – Esam, Kenver, and Kobe.

Once we got to the airport, we explored, had something to eat, and hopped on a shuttle to take us to the Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) gate area. It was starting to feel real!


To Copenhagen!

Our first plane ride was almost 7.5 hours and we travelled forward in time to arrive bright and early in Denmark! We wish we could see more of the beautiful city of Copenhagen, but we needed to catch our connecting flight to Oslo! (You can see it here on the map. It was amazing to cross the Atlantic Ocean!)

Onwards to Oslo!

The Norway team experienced great Scandinavian hospitality on both flights – receiving meals, a pillow and blanket, te og kaffe (tea and coffee), and very pleasant-sounding flight announcements. Our last flight to get to Oslo was short, about one hour long and the views from the flight alone were worth it!

Train into Oslo city centre – our adventure begins!

Our jet-lagged Norway team enjoyed some classic Norwegian meals in the train station before walking to our hotel where we will be staying for the first few days as we settle into Oslo. We enjoyed the city sights and seeing all the Pride flags and the welcoming atmosphere.

Our team split up into groups to explore for the rest of the day. Stay tuned to hear about the rest of our trip as the days unfold!

Written by: Katelyn Macintosh, Sociology Our last morning in Oslo started with a bittersweet feeling and a hint of excitement about returning home. The day began bright and early at 3:45 am, which can be challenging as rising just before the sun is always a bit of a struggle. I was extremely grateful for our decision to take the shuttle to the airport. My bag felt full of bricks, and the thought of hauling it to the bus station was terrifying. The shuttle seemed like a minor miracle. Everyone in the group felt this because I had one of the lighter bags. Some other people's bags were almost as big as their persons, so I'm not sure how they did it; they must have super strength. As we boarded the plane to Copenhagen, I felt a pang of sadness leaving beautiful Norway behind, especially Oslo. But at the same time, I was excited to head home. Grateful that it happened

Armed with hugs from our amazing host, Anne, we made our way by bus to Oslo and headed to the Anker Hotel. Taking the 505 to Oslo “I feel like we just got here,” was a common refrain on the bus ride. After stowing our gear, Jess and Esam accompanied us professors as we dropped by the DNT offices on Storgata to debrief and say an emotional goodbye to Glenn. After leaving the DNT offices, we headed to the Akershus Fortress, for a last bit of sightseeing. We took in some phenomenal views of Oslo from the fortress walls which date back to 1299. The Relocation to Breivoll Farm

Written by: Kenver Fetalco, Business  Today, the fifth day of our trip, is when we pack up and head out of the hotel to the DNT offices for a lecture regarding friluftsliv and then to the cabins at Breivoll Farm. The anticipation of travelling to a new place was in the air as we got ready for the adventure that awaited us. Our day started at 7:00 am when Esam's alarm went off. Esam immediately got out of bed, but I stayed in bed for a few more minutes, enjoying the hotel room's convenience. At 7:25 a.m., I began packing my possessions. The previous evening's floating sauna visit had been an amazing experience. We arrived late to the hotel, but we were clearly excited about it, and some of us had put in so much effort to make it happen. Others in our group stayed up late as they couldn't bring themselves to unwind because of the excitement. Some had already packed their bags. From our hotel room, we enjoyed the most beautiful view.
